Amazon.com Review The Case for Christ records Lee Strobel's attempt to "determine if there's credible evidence that Jesus of Nazareth really is the Son of God." The book consists primarily of interviews between Strobel (a former legal editor at the Chicago Tribune) and biblical scholars such as Bruce Metzger. Each interview is based on a simple question, concerning historical evidence (for example, "Can the Biographies of Jesus Be Trusted?"), scientific evidence, ("Does Archaeology Confirm or Contradict Jesus' Biographies?"), and "psychiatric evidence" ("Was Jesus Crazy When He Claimed to Be the Son of God?"). Together, these interviews compose a case brief defending Jesus' divinity, and urging readers to reach a verdict of their own.

The Case for Christ gets thrown out of court due to lack of evidence July 22, 2010 J. Cournoyer (The Queen City, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Contrary to what some reviewers have said, I actually don't mind the fact that the author only presents a one-sided argument to defend his views. The book is called "The Case for Christ" after all, so what the heck did you expect? With that aside, lets focus on the actual book:
Lee Strobel presents numerous arguments in his book to convince the reader that Jesus was a historical figure, that Jesus was divine, that the gospels are trustworthy, that Jesus' miracles and resurrection actually happened, etc. Unfortunately, the evidence Strobel offers to convince the reader is rather weak, and sometimes downright laughable! For instance, Strobel acquires the "expert" opinion of a psychologist, one who happens to be a Christian apologist as well, to convince the reader that Jesus was a sane individual and not a crazy lunatic. Of course, this psychologist relies solely on the gospels to formulate his "expert" opinion that Jesus was not at all crazy but was in perfect mental health. This is entirely ridiculous because the gospels, containing numerous discrepancies, errors, and contradictions, aren't exactly the most trustworthy books ever written. How the hell can a modern day psychologist offer an "expert" opinion on a guy who's been dead for 2,000 years, and base that opinion on four gospels that contradict each other in many places? This is the most absurd use of psychology I've ever heard of! And this is just one example of "evidence" that Lee Strobel provides to convince the reader that Jesus was the divine messiah. Fortunately, the book is well written and well structured, making it easy for almost anyone to pick up and read. Strobel is a good writer, but definitely not a good historian.
If you're looking for a more convincing argument, one that is based on historical scholarship, then read "Jesus Interrupted" by Bart Ehrman.
For Chrsitians and Non-Christians, A Good Read, BUT....... July 21, 2010 Suzanne Olsson (New York and India) In writing my own book about Jesus, I asked from the very beginning, `Who is this man who claims he talked with God directly? Am I wasting my time following a madman?" "Which god was Jesus experiencing? With so many religions and prophets, often making conflicting claims... which messenger can we trust?"
I do not agree with the concept of God that Lee Strobel has. One can read the Bible and come away with very different perceptions of exactly who/what the Biblical God really is. Is he a local God we created when we were ignorant of how the natural world functioned? Is he a product of our superstitions? Was he created within our galaxy? Is God an alien visitor with higher intelligence, just passing through on an intergalactic ship? Did God come into being at the very moment of creation? Or are we part of a multi-verse, where Universes come and go, and all atoms are simply God's box of crayola crayons to be experimented with? What is a soul?
Many questions are not answered in this book. I do not agree with all this author believes in. I do not believe that souls go to heaven or hell, or that all can be forgiven if one just follows the rules: to be Baptised, or not, to circumcize, or not, to eat the meat but don't worship the cow, or worship the cow but don't eat the meat...so in spite of Strobel's best intentions, we still cannot take everything in the Bible literally, or on blind faith. There are simply too many contradictions.
Christianity is a belief system - not a knowledge system. The idea of trying to prove everything occurred in the Bible exactly as it is written is a false foundation because everything that is written can be interpreted in many ways, or written in different ways during different times by different men. If they were all experiencing the same God, they would have written the same answers each time. They didn't.
My own independent research has led me to very different conclusions about the Bible, and so I have become a strange sort of self-created Christian (with Buddhist underpinnings) who believes that Jesus is unique and had something important to say, but not necessarily messages that we are understanding.
I spent years in India and Central Asia to follow the trail of Jesus there. I came away from the experience with a profound new respect and admiration for the man Jesus. I may not have arrived at the same conclusions as Lee Strobel about the meaning behind Jesus' life and death, but we have both come away from our investigations with a deep and abiding love and respect for the man Jesus.
Christianity is the largest religion on earth, and is the fastest growing. This book will be an affirmation of faith for many, and an interesting biography about Jesus for non-Christian readers.
I do recommend it even though I don't agree with all the author's personal conclusions.

not as advertised June 30, 2010 Sandra (Spokane Wa) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
I ordered 2 copies of this used book from different vendors, as neither had 2 in stock. Both were rated as above average. The first book to arrive was beautiful, and truly like new-better than advertised. The second book, received from vendor Hungry Bookworm was in pretty bad condition. The book was marked up in many places with highlighter. Pages were bend down and creased, the front cover was very used across the top, but worst of all, the book had water damage-something spilled on it marred pretty much the whole top half of the book. Had anyone at this company inspected the book, the damage would have been immediately obvious. Although this may well have been an abberation, I would not order from this vendor ever again. The contents of the book are really good, and I like to have copies on hand to give to new Christians. It helps them answer a lot of the silly objections non Christians are so fond of using.
Excellent Book! June 29, 2010 Corey Adams (Dallas) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If there are any doubters about the case for Christ, aside from the Bible itself, this is the best book you can read. Read it in conjunction with the Bible, and there can be no doubt about the resurrection or lordship of Jesus. Highly recommended.
