Amazon.com Review In Outlander, a 600-page time-travel romance, strong-willed and sensual Claire Randall leads a double life with a husband in one century, and a lover in another. Torn between fidelity and desire, she struggles to understand the pure intent of her heart. But don't let the number of pages and the Scottish dialect scare you. It's one of the fastest reads you'll have in your library. While on her second honeymoon in the British Isles, Claire touches a boulder that hurls her back in time to the forbidden Castle Leoch with the MacKenzie clan. Not understanding the forces that brought her there, she becomes ensnared in life-threatening situations with a Scots warrior named James Fraser. But it isn't all spies and drudgery that she must endure. For amid her new surroundings and the terrors she faces, she is lured into love and passion like she's never known before. I was lame and sore in every muscle when I woke next morning. I shuffled to the privy closet, then to the wash basin. My innards felt like churned butter. It felt as though I had been beaten with a blunt object, I reflected, then thought that that was very near the truth. The blunt object in question was visible as I came back to bed, looking now relatively harmless. Its possessor [Jamie] woke as I sat next to him, and examined me with something that looked very much like male smugness." Gabaldon creates characters that you'll remember, laugh with, cry with, and cheer for long after you've finished the book. --Candy Paape
Product Description The year is 1945 and Claire Beauchamp Randall, a former British combat nurse, is on holiday in Scotland with her husband, looking forward to becoming reacquainted after the war's long separation. Like most practical women, Claire hardly expects her curiosity to get the better of her. But an ancient stone circle near her lodgings holds an eerie fascination, and when she innocently touches one of the giant boulders, she's hurtled backward in time more than two hundred years, to 1743.Alone where no lady should be alone, and far from the familiar comforts of her other life, Claire's usual resourcefulness is tested to the limit. The merciless garrison captain so feared by others bears an uncanny resemblance to the husband she has just left behind. Her own odd circumstances expose her to accusations of witchcraft. And the strands of a political intrigue she doesn't understand threaten to ensnare her at every turn. But of all the perils her new life holds, none is more disquieting than her growing feelings for James Fraser, the gallant young Scot she is forced to marry for her own protection. Sworn by his wedding vows to keep her from harm, Jamie's passion for Claire goes beyond duty. As she struggles with the memories of another lifetime, she is forced to make an agonizing and fateful choice, and learns ultimately that a man's instinct to protect the woman he loves is as old as time.

good July 30, 2010 E. Meadows (Little Rock, AR USA) Received my purchase within the specified amount of time and it was in good condition. However, the book cover was not the same as depicted and though this doesn't really matter I had wanted the blue cover version.
be prepared to not put it down July 30, 2010 diana gabaldon is a spell weaver of a story teller. be prepared to become consumed with her chaeractors without coming up for a breath till the last book has been read. then you will beg for more.
Outlander series displaced my most fave book series after 48 years in first place! July 27, 2010 DDavis (NE OH USA) Started reading the first book in the Outlander series on July 1. Finished the seventh book on July 23. Began the second reading on July 24.
For more than 48 years my favorite historical romance novel has been "Angelique," followed by the subsequent novels in the Angelique series which were written over a span of nearly four decades by husband/wife team known collectively as Sergeanne Golon. Never in my life did I expect my beloved Angelique series to be usurped. Geoffrey and Angelique, I still love ya, but it is time to step aside.
Hello Jamie and Claire!
Enjoyable...but July 23, 2010 Jamie 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I basically enjoyed the book, but while many cringed at the scene where Jamie beats Claire, I found reading about one child whipping after another disturbing to say the least. Claire is a grown woman and in the end, was able to make him swear never to hurt her like that again. The brutalized children can't say the same. It also bothered me when Claire asked Jamie if he would beat their kids, and when he answered yes, she didn't put up a fight. I'd like to move on in the series, but if I have to read chapter after chapter about child abuse, no thank you.
Difficult to put down! July 19, 2010 K. Bergamo (FL, USA) Diana Gabaldon has what I consider a special author's voice, one that speaks to me in a way that I truly enjoy and appreciate. Outlander is a very intense and beautifully written historical romance novel. I bought this book at the airport; I had a long flight awaiting me and I was looking for something to entertain me. The story captivated me from the very first page and I was reading avidly until the plane landed to my destiny. I consider Outlander a very intense, beautifully written combination of time travel-mystery-historical-adventure and romance novel, very difficult to put down.
