Highly Recommended!! February 10, 2010 Sandra L. Terrado (W Sacramento, CA) A fellow lampwork artist suggested I purchase this book to further my knowledge on my glass work but I didn't realize what an awesome book this was until I received it and quickly thumbed through it. Lots of colorful photos, artists short bio's and sample bead/sculptural work plus several VERY useful tutorial and lampworking techniques......WOW, what a great book for those who are artists and those who just love to look at beautiful work!!!
phenomenal book October 11, 2009 Vicki Maheu (San Diego CA) Beads of Glass by Cindy Jenkins is a must have for anyone interested in making or loving glass beads. It includes sample work by the best glass bead makers in the world including tutorials on a large number of techniques used by many of the artists in the book. it is awe-inspiring to say the least. I will be studying the techniques in this book for a long time. Even if you are not lucky enough to be in San Diego so you can study with one of the best teachers, Heather Trimlett, you will gain invaluable insight into how these beautiful pieces of art are made. Be sure to also purchase 'Making Glass Beads' by the same author. Making Glass Beads
Beautiful Beads and Generous Artists September 22, 2009 mtot7359 (Texas, of course) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is a good combination of what lampwork beads can be, at their finest, who makes them, and how. It includes three sections, followed by a glossary and several indices.
This book includes three major sections. The first is a dozen pages of beads created by the artists in the book. A legend for these pages appears at the back to identify each bead and its maker. The overall effect of these pages is remarkable.
The second section presents each artist on a page giving a brief resume, a quote and several beads of the artist's making, usually including the bead(s) they are most famous for.
The third section shows lampwork techniques in beautiful still photography, by the lampwork artists included in the book. These include basic techniques and more advanced ones, including come of the artists' most important techniques, which is very generous.
If you are interested in who makes these beautiful works of art, these are some of the best and their creations. If you want an idea of how they are made, you will find the how-to section informative. And if you are new to collecting lampwork beads, this book will give you a good idea of what the best beads look like and the names of some of the best lampwork artists making them.
Excellent resource for the beginner August 18, 2008 Tracy Quigley Bailif 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a wonderful book to begin with if you have never melted glass in your life, or if you have had minimal training. It explains all the equipment you will need to start your glass studio. It gives clear instructions on several fairly simple beadmaking techniques, with which you can expand on with your own creativity. The pictures of the beads are beautifully photographed and will give you endless ideas just by looking at them. If you are an intermediate to advanced lampworker, though, this book would be far too basic for you.
Fantastic! May 31, 2008 M. Marmalstein (Seattle, WA USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I took a weekend beginning beadmaking class, and my teacher sent me home Saturday night with this book. I read it cover to cover and went back the next day inspired by all of the talented beadmakers who were so generous as to share their years of experience. I made much better beads that second day, and have been hooked ever since. The biographies are inspiring; so many discovered beadmaking and and changed careers. The techniques are well illustrated with photos. I highly recommend this book to motivated beginners.
