Product Description Percy Jacksons seventh-grade year has been surprisingly quiet. Not a single monster has set foot on his New York prep-school campus. Butwhen an innocent game of dodgeball among Percy and his classmates turnsinto a death match against an ugly gang of cannibal giants, things get. . . well, ugly. And the unexpected arrival of Percys friend Annabethbrings more bad news: the magical borders that protect Camp Half-Bloodhave been poisoned by a mysterious enemy, and unless a cure is found, the only safe haven for demigods will be destroyed. In this fresh, funny, and hugely anticipated follow up to The Lightning Thief,Percy and his friends must journey into the Sea of Monsters to savetheir beloved camp. But first, Percy will discover a stunning newsecret about his family -- one that makes him question whether beingclaimed as Poseidons son is an honor or simply a cruel joke. The plot is basically the same as in book #1. The author rushes thru the events to create a sense of curiosity in the readers but it backfired. It is a pity because mythology is a great field which could be used for great books. Percy's series fail completely. Maybe a 9 year child would appreciate reading this as his first book. That is the only reason it deserves 2 stars.
Riordan keeps me reading! July 16, 2010 A. Paxman Another great adventure in this series as Percy discovers he has a brother, and takes on the sea of monsters and a cyclops in his quest to acquire the golden fleece to save camp half-blood. My boys will love the monsters in this book!
Better than the first in my opinion. July 15, 2010 Travis Stein (Houston, TX (USA)) Even though I gave the first book in the Olympian Series 4 stars as well, it was more like 3.5. I'd give this book a full half-star more just because a majority of the story takes place away from Hogwarts (erm I mean, Camp Half Blood) and has less of a Harry Potter feel to it. The main thing? Percy and company are back for their 7th grade years and things are seemingly going well for Percy so far. After all, he's enjoying his New York prep school and when Book 2 begins is going into his last day without a single monster sighting or report. Quite a feat for Percy!
Then things start to return to "normal" for Percy. A seemingly routine dodge ball match turns into a death match against a big/burly group of cannibal giants (also known as the Canadians in the book, lol). Then things start to get rolling after that. Annabeth arrives at Percy's prep school and brings the bad news that Camp Half-Blood has been poisoned by a unknown enemy and that unless a cure is found... the only safe haven known to the half-bloods will be gone forever.
Pros:
- better action scenes than Book 1
- slightly less cheesy narrating and humor from Percy throughout the book.
- a great deal less of a Hogwarts/Harry Potter setting/theme as most of the story takes place (thankfully) away from Camp Half-Blood.
- Rick Riordan again excels in giving his audience a book they can absolutely BREEZE through while reading. It really is great to just simply lose track of the pages as you sink in the book for hours.
Cons:
- still somewhat of a Harry Potter feel and then the unusually corny humor/dialogue is still there, but less of both in this book in contrast with Book 1.
- that's about it. a lot of the cons I felt were in Book 1, appeared less in Book 2... which is a good thing :)
Overall:
In a book that has more action, slightly less cheesy dialogue, and less of a Harry Potter feel than Book 1 - The Sea of Monsters makes for a refreshing read as Book 2. If you were slightly disappointed with Book 1, take a shot on Book 2 and see how you enjoy it!
great followup to a great first book July 14, 2010 Ryan S. Carrigan (RIVERSIDE, CA, US) this series is great and thank goodness for my kindle i was able to buy the next one and get reading without skipping a beat!
Great book to teach mythology to teens and adults! July 7, 2010 Karla E. Patterson (Texas) I am thoroughly enjoying this book. I also enjoyed the first book in the series. It's a great way to learn about mythology from a perspective that I think is very similar to the experience people had 3,000 years ago. The book definitely keeps you interested while exploring the world through the characters. Thanks for such a wonderful story!
