| Customer Reviews: Take Five September 9, 2010 Casey Burns Take Five by Kathy Brown gave me an opportunity to rethink how I do my quilts. I decided to follow her suggestions and her simple steps to make a quilt and see what happened.
I chose a theme fabric I really liked, and picked four coordinates. That was easy! The cutting and piecing went surprisingly fast as I followed Kathy's directions. The illustrations and steps could be understood at a glance, (a hallmark of the Martingale & Company's quilt books.) I soon had the top completed. Quickly and easily. Wow! That was the fastest quilt I ever put together.
I'm so pleased with my completed top, and love most of the other quilts in the book. I'm impressed with how she figured out a way to cut five fabrics the same, and put them together to make stunning quilts. I will definitely make more of Kathy's designs. I also know that I'll use Kathy's techniques for a more relaxed way to make quilts.
Martingale quilt books are my favorites because the illustrations are gorgeous, the directions are clear, and the authors each have something new to teach me.
P.S. The quilt I made was "Take Five Has Yo-Yo's to Go-Go" selected by my seven 6year old granddaughter.
A great book for beginning quilters! September 5, 2010 Joe Fox (Seattle, WA USA) "Take 5: Quilts from just 5 Fabrics" showcases a variety of quilt projects which can be made beautifully with just five fabrics. These quilts are wonderful whether you are a beginning quilter, or are uncomfortable having to match a a variety of fabrics. Kathy Brown provides specific directions on fabric selection, cutting and assembling the quilt tops in an easy straight forward manner.
Her philosophy is to select a single focus fabric and then use that to choose the four coordinating fabrics. Whether it is the bright intensity of "Take 5...Make New Friends" or the subtile floral of "Take 5...Reaches for the Stars" you can see how the fabrics come together to set the tone for the quilt.
"Take 5" provides directions for 15 projects which are fun and easy to pull together.

Take Home, Take 5! August 1, 2010 R. Bruck (Seattle, WA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
What's great about Kathy Brown's Take 5, isn't that you can make a quilt with just 5 fabrics, but it's her whole message behind her Take 5 philosophy: picking and choosing fabrics doesn't have to be mind numbingly frustrating and cutting them doesn't have to be a chore. She's broken down her Take 5 methodology into an easy to follow steps of finding a fabric you love, getting the supporting fabrics, cutting them quickly (she shows you how), organizing them (again, shows you how!) and then getting to the fun part - sewing! Kathy breaks this down for you beautifully - and on each quilt.
The quilts themselves are impressively simple - and simply gorgeous. The colors, textures, and designs are all outstanding choices - "Plays Fair and Square" is an great example of a deceptively simple quilt with on-point squares and tons of areas to show off your fabric choices as well as your quilting! "Across the Miles" leaves you mouth watering for a million different fabric choices - and the fabric cutting is so simple!
All the pictures are full color and just lovely. The instructions are well thought out and thorough (I thought for a moment she was having me make two extra blocks in Crosses the Line - but nope, she addresses it!). All the quilts can be done by a beginner, although the book does assume a basic knowledge of quilting. More advanced quilters will find a great abundance of quick weekend quilts.
Take 5 will have you looking at fabric in a whole new way and, with any luck, you'll never be frustrated picking out your fabric again! Truly a delightful book to have in your quilting library.
Great new quilt book May 23, 2010 V. M. Reed (Starkville, MS United States) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
TAKE 5: QUILTS FROM JUST 5 FABRICS by Kathy Brown is a great new quilt book. Really good photos of the quilts; and I'm especially proud to know Linda Reed, my sister-in-law, who pieced all but two of the quilts featured in the book. I think you will find the patterns simple enough even for a beginning quilter and great quick quilts for those who are more advanced. Happy Quilting!
