5 out of 5 stars Great guide   July 20, 2010

Great area maps for cities. Restaraunt recommendations at multiple price points, from street food to fine dining. Worth the price of book for information regarding skipping the lines at major attractions, we skipped extremely long lines in both Venice and Rome by buying our tickets at the alternate locations suggested. Also apprieciate the historcal background given for cities and sites. This book was superior to Lonely Planet and Let's Go books I've used in the past.

4 out of 5 stars Generally useful, not always reliable   June 16, 2010

Rick Steves gives a fairly detailed introduction to Italy here. The information is reasonably up to date and will benefit first-time visitors particularly. I have used other guide books in my travels. Rick Steves' is among the best.

This book is not perfect, however. The Rome Metro actually includes commuter rails and the same ticket allows free transfers. This is not mentioned at all in the book. Considering how sparse the subway coverage is, I think the omission needs to be corrected.

The restaurants he recommends for Rome are not as good as those we pick for ourselves. This is pretty irking, although we agree with his picks on gelateria. In regard to shopping, he is totally clueless, according to my wife, who has substantial expertise in the matter. Rome is full of surprises, however, so even random wandering has been great fun.

I'm planning a trip to Italy in September and would never attempt it without Rick's books. The 2007 version is also in my library so I will compare the 2. We looked at a cruise but realized we couldn't get a real feel for the country that way. He spells out so many of the daily needs and customs, sleeping accommodations, restaurants and sites ranked. My itinerary is done so I'm working on the details. Ciao

5 out of 5 stars A Guide to World War II Sites in Italy   April 28, 2010

I have used Rick Steves' guidebooks in the past. They are excellent but have little information about World War II sites in Italy. I have just published a travel guidebook on that subject: please look at: A Travel Guide to World War II Sites in Italy: Museums, Monuments, and Battlegrounds. This guidebook describes places that are in or near Rome, Florence, Bologna, and Lucca, but are rarely noted in general travel guides for Italy.
